Why Lean FIRE Isn’t for Everyone — and How Smart Investing Can Change the Game

In our last article, we explored the main flavours of FIRE, Lean, Fat, Barista, Coast, and a few others. Today, we’re going to take a deeper dive into Lean FIRE and why, for many people, it might not be the most practical path. But don’t worry, there’s a smarter way to achieve financial independence faster, without living like a monk.

Lean FIRE is the ultimate minimalist approach: live frugally, cut every unnecessary expense, save aggressively, and retire as early as possible.

How Much You Have to FIRE?

According to the Singapore Department of Statistics, the average monthly household expenditure for an average household in 2017-2018 is about $4,90, or about $58,872 annually.

Using the 25x rule, the most common FIRE guideline to estimate how much money you need to retire and live off your investments indefinitely, $58,872 multiplied by 25 years is around $1,471,800.

The 25x rule is derived from the 4% rule, which suggests you can withdraw 4% of your portfolio each year (adjusted for inflation) and have a high likelihood of your money lasting 30+ years. And since 1÷ 0.04 = 25, you need 25 times your annual expenses to generate 4% withdrawals.

The Reality of Lean FIRE

For the purposes of this article, let's assume that the average single person in Singapore spends around $1,628 monthly, or about $19,526 annually

Using the 25x rule (the common FIRE guideline) and a 4% annual withdrawl rate, you would need roughly $500,000 to retire. On paper, it looks achievable — save around $50,000 per year or about $4,205 per month, and in about ten years, you could hit that number.

But here’s the catch: Lean FIRE assumes extreme discipline and sacrifice. No car, living with parents or roommates, minimal entertainment, zero luxuries. For some, that’s just not sustainable — or enjoyable.

How Long Does It Take?

Let’s run a simple scenario:

  • Annual income: $70,000
  • Annual expenses (Lean FIRE budget): $19,536
  • Annual savings: $70,000 - $19,536 ≈ $50,000

If you invest this in a low-risk account earning 2% per year, in 10 years, your savings would grow to roughly $608,000. Not bad, right? Enough to retire early, at least by Lean FIRE standards.

But 2% isn’t exciting because your money is barely keeping pace with inflation.

The Smarter Way: Invest for Growth

Now let’s consider someone who applies smart investing:

  • Same annual savings: $50,000
  • Invested in a diversified stock market index or quality businesses, targeting 10% average annual return

After 10 years, this portfolio could grow to $926,000.

Take it one step further
: with 15% average annual returns (like disciplined value investing strategies taught in our Value Investing Programme), your 10-year portfolio could reach $1.2 million.

  • 4% annual withdrawal = $48,000/year (~$4,000/month)
  • That’s enough to cover expenses, and your remaining capital continues growing.
Suddenly, Lean FIRE transforms into a comfortable, sustainable lifestyle, without extreme frugality. This is where knowledge and disciplined investing make all the difference.

The Key Takeaways

  1. Lean FIRE is possible, but restrictive. Extreme frugality is tough to maintain.
  2. Smart investing accelerates freedom. With higher returns, you can reach financial independence faster and live more comfortably.
  3. The FIRE goal is choice, not austerity. True financial independence is the ability to work because you want to, not because you have to.
  4. Start early if you can. Compounding is your most powerful tool. But even if you’re starting later — in your 30s or 40s — disciplined investing can still get you closer to early retirement than you think.
